Community Service

The Mortar Board's core values are scholarship, leadership, and service. Service can be defined in giving back to the community you are in, whether it be city, state, or organizational, such as Texas Tech.

In keeping with the "service" aspect of our core values, each year Mortar Board members nominate a Chair of Community Service to be responsible for organizing events in and about our local community of Lubbock, Texas. He or she arranges community service events such as reading to kids, cooking at Ronald McDonald's House, beautifying our community, and much, much more. Through this Chair of Community Service, our members are provided with opportunities to give back to the local community, hopefully making it a better place.

In 1985, the collegiate members decided they wanted each chapter to engage in and actively promote a national project each year.  Over several years, the national project promoted many issues, and today’s permanent project is “Reading is Leading.” In keeping with our national project, our members head out into the local schools several times a semester to read with the children in hopes that it will fuel their interest in books and reading.

This year's Chair of Community Service is Sandra Hon, who is doing a wonderful job in connecting the Mortar Board Forum Chapter members with the community.
